2018 Jeep Cherokee: Release date, prices, specs, and features

WHAT’S NEW

The most significant change for 2018 Jeep Cherokees is not related to design, mechanics, or even technology, but to what FCA refers to as “realigned” trim levels. The base trim of the five varieties for 2018 is the Latitude. The Latitude Plus is a new trim that packages popular upgrades. The Cherokee Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawkeach have new standard features.
On December 19, 2017, FCA’s Jeep division released teaser photos of the 2019 Cherokee, promising a “new, authentic, and premium design” and additional fuel-efficient powertrain choices. Jeep also stated in a brief notice that the 2019 Cherokee will be formally introduced January 16, 2018, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Pricing, specific trim details, and availability dates for the 2019 Cherokee were not announced, but will likely be a few months after the January introduction.

ENGINES AND TRANSMISSIONS

All 2018 Cherokees have a nine-speed automatic transmission paired with either a 184-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder or a 271-hp 3.2-liter V6 engine. The 2.4-liter engine is standard equipment on all but the Overland trim, which comes with the 3.2-liter V6. Two-wheel-drive is standard on four of the five trims, with three different four-wheel drive system options. The Trailhawk has four-wheel drive standard.

TECH FEATURES

For 2018, All Cherokee have antilock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), traction control, hill-start assist, keyless entry, rearview backup camera, and trailer sway control.
The Latitude with the Tech Connect Package, an option group for the base trim not to be confused with the new Latitude Plus trim, has an Amazon Alexa skill for voice-activated requests through an included Echo Dot. The Tech-Connect Package also adds an upgraded audio and connectivity system that includes navigation, plus an upgraded exterior with gloss black finishes and 18-inch aluminum wheels.
The Latitude Plus trim has an available SafetyTec Group option package that includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross path detection, ParkSense rear parking assistance, and power multifunction foldaway mirrors.
Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross path detection, and rear backup warning are standard on the Limited, Overland, and Trailhawk trims. Those three trims can also opt for the Technology Group option package, with Jeep’s full current suite of safety and driver-assistance features.
The Technology Group includes advanced brake assistance, full-speed forward collision warning with crash mitigation, LaneSense lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, and parallel and perpendicular parking assistance, plus exterior mirrors with courtesy lights and turn signal indicators, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and automatic headlamp high-beam control.

HOW TO CHOOSE A 2018 JEEP CHEROKEE

The five major trims in the 2018 Jeep Cherokee lineup include the Latitude, Latitude Plus, Limited, Overland, and Trailhawk. The Latitude and Limited can each be ordered with the Altitude blackout appearance package for buyers who prefer blacked-out wheels and trim instead of the standard body color and chrome trims. Starting prices range from $24,395 for the 4×2 Cherokee Latitude to $37,340 for the 4×4 Overland.
When Digital Trends reviewed the 2015 Cherokee Trailhawk, we were impressed by its outstanding off-road capability. The crossover, based on a Fiat car platform also used by Fiat, Chrysler, and Alfa Romeo, handled highway driving as well as it did rugged trails. When choosing a Cherokee, start with deciding on the respective levels of comfort, convenience, luxury, and off-road performance that matter to you based on the amount you want to spend.

2017 Volvo XC90 Prices, Reviews and Pictures

Now in its second model year since being totally redesigned, the uncommonly elegant 2017 Volvo XC90 is the company’s flagship. It certainly looks the part of a premium crossover, with quietly assertive styling that promises to stand the test of time. It is Scandinavian design writ large inside and out; modern yet devoid of gimmickry; luxurious in its simplicity. Its cabin marries textures including matte-finish wood, metal, leather and even crystal. If there’s any doubt as to its luxury aspirations, the available 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system will put them to rest.
The XC90 takes a modern approach to its propulsion with a 316-horsepower four-cylinder engine that’s both turbocharged and supercharged. There’s also a plug-in hybrid variant that generates 400 horsepower and can travel up to 14 miles on battery power alone.
Its good looks are not only skin deep — the XC90 boasts a long list of safety and driver assistance features in its meticulously trimmed cabin. Frontal collision detection with automatic braking is standard, and it also applies the brakes when the driver attempts to turn in front of an oncoming car. Energy-absorbing seat cushions and self-tightening seat belts reduce potential spinal injuries if the vehicle careens off the road. For 2017, auto-steering has been been added to prevent a road departure in the first place. There’s also Pilot Assist II, new for 2017, which provides a semi-autonomous driving mode at speeds up to 80 mph.
Choices are plentiful in the premium crossover segment. The Acura MDX delivers a compelling combination of features, willing performance and precise handling. For those willing to go a bit more upmarket, the BMW X5 is a perennial front-runner that is additionally available with a frugal diesel engine. The Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class offers surprisingly ample cabin room and a third row that’s suitable for adults.
The 2017 Volvo XC90's standard safety features include antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front seat side-impact airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and anti-whiplash front seats. Also standard are a rearview camera, frontal collision warning (including pedestrian/cyclist protection) and automatic braking for front-crash mitigation. The new XC90 also debuts what Volvo calls Run-off Road Protection, whereby if the vehicle goes off the road, the seat belts automatically tighten up and the seat cushions absorb impact energy if the vehicle comes down hard on its suspension. The Volvo On Callservice includes emergency assistance, remote door locking and unlocking, automatic collision notification and stolen vehicle location.
The 2018 Volvo XC90 has already been given to the globe and compared with the previous model, it’s gotten just a few minor upgrades. what is more, the automaker is additionally acting on the most recent version of this model that ought to enter the showrooms because of the 2019 Volvo XC90
Safety options include a surround-view camera, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning and intervention, and a child booster seat built into the center position of the second row.
In Edmunds testing, an XC90 T6 with the 21-inch wheels stopped from 60 mph in 124 feet, which is a slightly longer-than-average distance for this class of crossover SUV. An XC90 T8 we tested did the same deed in 119 feet.
In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, the 2016 XC90 earned a top score of Good for its performance in the moderate-overlap and small-overlap front-impact tests. It also earned a Good score in the side-impact, roof strength and head restraint (whiplash protection) tests and a top Superior score for its forward collision mitigation system's accident avoidance performance. Although the 2017 XC90 hasn’t been tested, we expect the same results because the vehicle is nearly identical to last year’s model.

what's new

The 2017 Volvo XC90 receives updates to its driver assistance system and more apps for its infotainment system, plus the addition of a range-topping new trim level.

trim levels & features

The 2017 Volvo XC90 is a four-passenger (T8 Excellence only), five-passenger (T5) or seven-passenger (T6 and T8) luxury crossover SUV that comes in four levels: base Momentum, sporty R-Design, plush Inscription and ultra-luxe Excellence. Regular XC90s are referred to as the T5 and T6, while the hybrid is called the T8 Twin Engine Plug-In Hybrid. The following standard and optional equipment is largely common across T5, T6 and T8 variants.

2017 Toyota 4Runner Prices, Reviews and Pictures

The last of an increasingly rare breed of truck-based SUVs, the 4Runner will take you off the beaten path like few other production vehicles. Adverse terrain is where it thrives, so if that's not where you generally tread, the Toyota Highlander is a better choice.

While day-to-day commuting isn't the Toyota 4Runner's forte, this midsize SUV is thoughtfully designed. Weekend excursions are what this traditional SUV does best thanks to rugged drivetrain hardware and enough ground clearance to deal with tricky off-road situations. Its cargo area is quite versatile, too, especially when equipped with the optional sliding rear cargo deck.

what's new

For 2017, the 4Runner is carried over with minimal changes. The Trail and Trail Premium are renamed TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium, and the TRD Pro Series is available in three additional colors.

we recommend

If you're shopping 2017 4Runners, off-road capability is likely a priority or you would be (or should be) shopping station wagons or crossovers. In light of that, the sweet spot in the 4Runner lineup is the TRD Off-Road Premium. It's the most affordable way to gain access to a locking rear differential and the KDSS suspension option, which enhances its off-road chops while maintaining manners on the road. Its "Premium" billing, however, adds creature comforts such as heated front seats with easy-clean premium vinyl upholstery, heated power outside mirrors and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

trim levels & features

The 2017 Toyota 4Runner is available in six trim levels: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro and Limited. All share the same 4.0-liter V6 (270 horsepower, 278 pound-feet of torque) and five-speed automatic transmission and are rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds. SR5 and Limited models are available in 4x2 or 4x4 configurations and offer third-row seating (for seven occupants) as an option. The remaining trim levels are 4x4 only and seat five. A low-range transfer case comes on 4x4 versions of the SR5, TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro trim levels.
The SR5 is the base model but it's not bare-bones. Standard features include cloth upholstery, skid plates, foglights, a backup camera, keyless entry, five 12-volt power outlets and a 120-volt AC power outlet.

Stepping up to TRD Off-Road adds some serious off-road chops in the form of a locking rear differential, wheels that are 0.5 inch wider and a crawl control function. It also offers the optional KDSS suspension.

Premium variants of the SR5 and TRD Off-Road get power-adjustable and heated outside mirrors, premium vinyl upholstery, navigation and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Serious off-roaders should consider the TRD Pro, which starts with the TRD Off-Road Premium and adds revised front springs, Bilstein dampers with rear remote reservoirs, Nitto Terra Grappler tires and a front skid plate.

Limited models top the 4Runner range. These models get a Torsen center differential (4x4 models only) plus a host of features to make it better suited to on-pavement use: 20-inch wheels, a sunroof, dual-zone climate control, parking alerts, perforated leather seat upholstery, a 15-speaker premium audio system. Power running boards are optional.

trim tested

Each vehicle typically comes in multiple versions, although trim levels share many aspects. The ratings in this review are based on our full test of the 2014 Toyota 4Runner Trail (4.0L V6 | 5-speed automatic | 4WD).

NOTE: Since this test was conducted, the current 4Runner has received very few changes beyond minor adjustments to feature content and trim levels (Trail became TRD Off-Road in 2017). Our findings remain broadly applicable to this year's 4Runner.

The best value in Toyota 4Runner 2019 is a base model with manual gearbox, but it’s still decently priced after adding fancy audio, leather, and a moonroof.
